Approximately 90 per cent of the 140 million people engaged in fisheries globally work in the small-scale fisheries sector, predominantly in the Global South. These small-scale fisher people catch half of the world’s total catches by volume and provide over 60 per cent of the fish destined for direct human consumption. This significant contribution to food security, livelihoods and to local and national economies is hoped to be better recognized through the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (the SSF Guidelines).
