The Japanese Consumers' Co-operative Union (JCCU) has joined the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) Global Partnership as a funding partner.

JCCU, the largest consumer organization in Japan representing 324 consumer co-ops and consumer co-op unions, is the first Co-operative (COOP) to join the GSSI Partnership globally.

“The ideal of the Japanese consumer co-op movement for the 21st Century is ‘Creating a more human lifestyle and a sustainable society through the concerted efforts of autonomous citizens’," said Atsushi Okubo, operating officer, merchandising division, JCCU.

“JCCU aims to develop businesses based on this ideal and promote the procurement and sales of sustainable seafood products. By participating in the GSSI’s Global Partnership, we hope that the worldwide collaboration with many companies and organizations will expand.”

JCCU was established in March 1951, as the national federation of consumers co-ops in Japan. As the national organisation, JCCU develops and improves COOP brand products that meet members’ daily needs. Furthermore, JCCU formulates national policies of consumer co-ops, expresses co-ops’ views to the government and to other groups at the national and international level, and advocates consumers’ views on food
