\nWho feeds our people and doesn’t count the cost
\nYou are the woman
\nWho comes home late in the joy-filled evenings;
\nListen, woman of the landing site
\nListen, you crafter of our hopes
\nWoman from the muddy ground
\nStruggling in the bad weather
\nOffer me a basket filled with bonga<\/em>1<\/sup>
\nGive me those pelagic fish
\nthat give sweat flavours
\nto the peanut sauce
\nand to the palm oil.<\/p>\n
\nYour breast is filled with hope
\nLike a sailing-boat at sea
\nWoman who comes home late in the evening
\nand watches all night
\nover the smoking grills
\nWoman smoker with fiery hair
\nWoman of the poto-potos<\/em>2<\/sup>
\nYou carry within you
\nLakes with the names of Princesses and Queens
\nYour body exudes the sweet smell
\nOf the fish smoked by your sweat
\nWoman smoker,
\nI’ll write your name in red-letters, make you a knot of joy.<\/p>\n
\nHow many mouths have you fed
\nWith the milk from your breasts
\nAnd with the beads of sweat from your brow?
\nWhat joy for the town
\nand village folk of this beautiful country.
\nWhat joy for the fishermen
\nAnd for the consumers!<\/p>\n
\nPiroguier<\/em>3<\/sup> hoping for a better tomorrow,
\nDo you know how fond this great people are
\nOf the konko\u00e9<\/em>4<\/sup> from the improved banda<\/em>5<\/sup> ?
\nPray for the woman smoker
\nWho labours on the jetties
\nWatching the horizon
\nin search of the fishermen’s arrival
\nListen to the flouf flouf<\/em> of the pelagics
\nJoy is dawning
\nOn the ocean of hope.<\/p>\n
\nListen, piroguier<\/em>
\nThe smoke reddened grills
\nThe banda<\/em> engulfed in smoke
\nis the precious creation
\nOf this woman, the author of our life
\nwhose body exhales
\nAll the perfumes of the earth.<\/p>\n
