Large- and small-scale fishers and communities on the Wild Coast of South\u00a0Africa\u00a0request that, at the very least, more scientific research be done on the effects of\u00a0exploration\u00a0activities, and that various stakeholders undertake greater engagement about such activities to gain a better understanding of any potential impacts of the activities.<\/p>\n
This was the message conveyed by community leaders who came together at the second precolloquium dialogue on August 25 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre to discuss the possible \u201ccoexistence of the upstream\u00a0petroleum\u00a0and fishing industries in South\u00a0Africa\u201d.<\/p>\n
The dialogue was jointly hosted by the Department of Mineral\u00a0Resources\u00a0and\u00a0Energy\u00a0(DMRE), the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the\u00a0Environment\u00a0(DFFE), and the\u00a0Petroleum\u00a0Agency of South\u00a0Africa\u00a0(Pasa).<\/p>\n
A joint statement by various community and\u00a0environmental\u00a0organisations describes the engagement as an attempt to \u201cpacify and weaken\u201d the clear message small-scale fishing communities have been sending to the DMRE and Pasa against the \u201cpillaging\u201d of their coastal waters.<\/p>\n
\u201cOil and gas\u00a0development and fishing activities cannot coexist,\u201d reads the statement, which is endorsed by the Masifundise Development Trust, One Ocean Hub, The Green Connection, the Coastal Justice Network, KwaZulu-Natal Subsistence Fisherfolks, the South Durban Community\u00a0Environmental\u00a0Alliance, and the SA Fishers Collective.<\/p>\n
The community and\u00a0environmental\u00a0organisations further state that the dialogue is an attempt by the DMRE and Pasa to make\u00a0oil and gas\u00a0exploration\u00a0\u201cpalatable\u201d to fishing communities, and is \u201cdeeply concerning and deceptive\u201d.<\/p>\n
