A fishermen’s alliance in Pingtung County, eastern Taiwan, said Wednesday that it is promoting an anti-shark finning policy by increasing the profitability of the rest of the shark.

The Liuchiu Fishermen’s Association said it has successfully developed shark fishballs in an effort to increase the economic value of the entire shark carcass as part of its efforts to encourage local fishermen to comply with the government’s anti-finning policy, adopted in April this year.

The anti-finning policy complies with international standards laid out by marine conservation groups such as the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission and the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, according to Taiwan’s Fisheries Agency.

Under the agency’s policy, fishermen are banned from harvesting only shark fins and are required to bring back the whole sharks to port before removing the fins.

This helps promote sustainable fisheries by reducing the number of sharks fishermen are able to kill because they are no longer allowed to store and transport only the fins.

The practice of finning has long been common among local fishermen, as demand for shark fins is high due to the Chinese custom of serving shark fin soup at weddings and banquets as way to symbolize wealth and status.
