When the first tidal wave struck Pari Island in Indonesia back in 2018, Arif Pujianto\u2019s entire home was flooded for more than 24 hours, contaminating the well from where he sourced his drinking water, rusting his motorbike and leading timber panels to fall off the walls.<\/p>\n
The 51-year-old fisherman was forced to abandon his belongings and flee with his wife and son to the other side of the Indonesian island, part of the famed Thousand Islands that lie off Java\u2019s northwestern coast, staying with a friend overnight.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was afraid,\u201d Pujianto told Al Jazeera. \u201cI became a refugee on my own land.\u201d<\/p>\n
The low-lying island of Pari, about 40km (25 miles) north of Jakarta, is on the front lines of the world\u2019s climate crisis. Extreme flooding is killing off trees and driving away tourists; chaotic weather has devastated fishing hauls; and rising sea levels are submerging the island of 1,500 residents.<\/p>\n
On average, Pari lies about 1.5 metres (4.9 feet) above sea level.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am angry with the situation,\u201d says Pujianto, who now uses rainwater to desalinate his well. \u201cI want to protect my land. I think about the future of my son, my family.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Pujianto and three other plaintiffs on Pari announced that they had formally lodged a lawsuit against the Swiss-based cement producer Holcim for its alleged role in the climate crisis.<\/p>\n
In July 2022, they submitted a request for conciliation in Zug, Switzerland \u2013 where Holcim has its headquarters \u2013 but with no agreement reached, they have decided to sue the company in the Swiss civil court.<\/p>\n
Supported by the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI), Swiss Church Aid (HEKS) and the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, the plaintiffs are demanding that Holcim, the world\u2019s largest manufacturer of building materials, reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 43 percent by 2030.<\/p>\n
