Various countries have started to use marine spatial planning (MSP) to achieve sustainable use, including the goal of developing a “Blue Economy”, and biodiversity conservation in ocean and coastal areas (see examples below). About 70 countries now have MSP initiatives, ranging from early stages (new authority, new funding arrangements) to plan revisions and adaptation (Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, China, and Australia).
