Begum Bazaar fish market needs attention for several years now. The lack of facilities and proper maintenance have angered both vendors and customers. The former complained that authorities have not renovated the market in the last few years and monsoons always worsen the situation around the place. One of the vendors, Jamuna Bai complained that nothing was done to improve the condition of the fish market in the last 40 years. He added, “whether it is rain or sun, we have to do business by putting up temporary shelters. The dirt inside and outside the market inconveniences the customers. I request the authorities to at least make permanent shelters for the vendors.” The apathy of the civic authorities towards their problems have upset the helpless vendors. Similarly, another vendor, Rajender Singh related, “I have been doing business here along with my mother since 1991. Although, all the vendors face the same problems, it seems no one is in a mood to hear our pleas. We have made several complaints and requests to the authorities to give us permanent shops and shelters in the market. Unfortunately, nothing was done for the Begum Bazaar fish market.” The Begum Bazaar fish market is the oldest fish market in Hyderabad. Nearly a thousand customers visit the market every day. But its unhygienic condition has started to deter buyers from coming to the market which, in turn, is adversely affecting business. Vendors complained that if they were to continue using the premises, the area must be thoroughly cleaned.
