At long last, traffic congestion in front of the Fish Market along EVN Road has been cleared following the shifting of a few shops operating by the roadside to sheltered cubicles constructed inside the available space. The largest Fish Market located near the ever-busy Stony Bridge point is managed by a private entity reportedly with political patronage. Several attempts were made by like-minded denizens working for beautification of the city to make the market operators see reason and to take remedial measures by themselves. The local body ensured orderliness by asking the operator to do whatever was necessary to clear obstruction to the road. According to motorists regularly using the road, though the situation is far better now, traffic policemen must be posted at the location since the sellers still stand by the roadside and invite them to their stalls. The Fish Market used to be an eyesore along the vital road that links Railway Junction with the Bus Stand. On Sundays, in particular, two-wheelers are parked haphazardly covering the space meant for traffic movement. Several thousands of vehicles passing by the road generate dust and smoke, making hygiene a casualty. Permission was accorded for the Fish Market by the local body several years back when it was a municipality. But, after it transformed into a Corporation, there has been a pressing need to shift it to the outskirts. Official sources said there was a long-term plan for shifting the entire Fish Market to the vicinity of the proposed satellite bus stand at Suriyampalayam.
