The Fisheries Department has planned to construct a fishing harbour in Tranquebar to help the fishermen of 14 major villages in the vicinity. Presently, these fishermen have to venture into sea from Nagapattinam and the construction of the new fishing harbour will help them in a big way, particularly during the monsoon. The fishing harbour will have all infrastructure such as groynes, jetty, landing facility, fish processing yard, auction block, rest room, generator all to be provided at an estimated cost of Rs.136 crore, official sources told The Hindu here on Monday. Ideal The availability of vast stretch of land between Tranquebar and Therkku Chandrapadi is considered ideal for the construction of the fishing harbour where at least 200 boats can be anchored. “It was a felt need of the fishermen from Chinnorpettai, Chandrapadi, Tranquebar, Kuttiyandur, Bommaiyanpettai, Perumalpettai and other villages, sources told The Hindu on Monday. D. Jayakumar, Fisheries Minister, who inspected the site at Tranquebar on Monday, said that the work would be taken up after the funds were released. O.S. Manian, Minister for Handlooms and Textiles and S. Palanisamy, District Collector, were present. Inspection Later, the Minister inspected the work on the construction of fishing harbour at Poompuhar being executed at an estimates cost of Rs. 148 crore. He said that a majority of the work had been completed.
