Fishermen who were affected in the oil spill off the Chennai coast said more boats and nets were damaged than the number arrived at by the Fisheries Department. Addressing a press meet here, M.R. Thyagarajan of the Meenava Thandhai K.R. Rajkumar Meenavar Nala Sangam said the association had approached the National Green Tribunal, which had directed them to provide details to the Fisheries Department. If found to be genuine, those fishermen too should be given compensation, the tribunal said. He said that the Fisheries Department had arrived at a compensation amount of Rs. 135.35 crore, which was hardly enough to cover the damage and loss of livelihood suffered by fishermen in the State. Mr. Thyagarajan said the NGT had also directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and other agencies to ensure that the sludge collected from the sea and coast is treated properly. It directed the State government to conduct a proper investigation and find out the cause of the accident and who the culprits were.
