To decongest the Rameswaram fishing jetty and persuade the fishermen to take to deep sea fishing in Indian Ocean and avoid getting arrested by the Sri Lankan navy, the Tamil Nadu government has proposed to establish a fish landing centre at Kunthukal near Pamban at an estimate of Rs. 60 crore. Fisheries Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi held talks with the Rameswaram fishermen leaders about the project after inspecting the site at Kunthukal and discussing the feasibility of the project with officials on Saturday. The fish landing centre would help fishermen to fish in the Gulf of Mannar and take to deep sea in the south, Mr Bedi said. The facility would help ease the Rameswaram fishing jetty, which was congested with more than 700 mechanised boats, officials said. With the reconstruction of the harbour at Mookaiyur near Sayalkudi, the Rameswaram fishing jetty could be decongested to a large extent, they said.
