The Tamil Nadu State Apex Fisheries Cooperative Federation (TAFCOFED) has established a modern retail fish stall here at an outlay of Rs. 10 lakh with the objective of making available fresh seafood and helping the local fishermen get a good price for their catch. Minister for Information Technology M. Manikandan, accompanied by Collector S. Natarajan, inaugurated the outlet, with kitchen and freezer facilities, near Amma Park on Saturday. The federation has built the outlet with 40% subsidy provided by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), T. Natarajan, project officer, TAFCOFED, said. This was the third outlet to be opened after outlets at Ariyalur and Neyveli. It plans to open more such outlets in Paramakudi, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Madurai and Kancheepuram. Though the district topped the State in fish production, the best species of prawn and crab were procured by the export companies. The federation plans to procure different species of fish, directly from the fishermen in Rameswaram, Pamban, Mandapam and other areas and make them available to the consumers, he said. “We will sell commonly consumed fish, prawn and crab varieties before expanding after studying the demand, Mr. Natarajan said. They would sell valued-added products such as crab soup, fish cutlet and fried fish in the evening.
