Nearly 10,000 fresh water reservoirs exist in Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Fisheries has taken measures in exploiting the allocated funds for the development hatcheries and aquaculture centers for the purpose of increasing the fish population of inland reservoirs. Accordingly, aquaculture centers will be established in the areas of Hambantota, Muruthawela, Kahandamodara, Polonnaruwa, Udawalawa and Iranamadu. Construction of hatcheries in Iranamadu and Kahandamodara hatcheries have already been completed while Muruthawela hatchery has entered the last stage of construction. With the establishment of the new hatcheries the amount of fingerlings is expected to be raised by 30 million. Around 150 million fingerlings are currently required to be released into the reservoirs.
