Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says Sri Lanka is in the process to regain its place in the European fish market. Sri Lanka was the deciding factor in fish prices of European markets ten years ago. However, it is now being decided by Maldives. The Minister has requested the Sri Lanka fish exporters association to obtain fish stocks from local fishermen when importing fish to foreign countries. It has been revealed that certain businessmen purchased fish from Maldives. Therefore, the fisher community says they do not receive a proper price for their products. A discussion in this regard was held at the Ministry of Fisheries last evening. Representatives of fishermen associations and fish exporters participated in the meeting. The Minister who spoke at the meeting disclosed that the government has decided to increase the Cess Tax imposed on imported fish from 50 to 100 rupees.
