The Federal Fisheries Council (CFP) of Argentina has enabled the capture of shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) in the area between parallels 44° and 45° south latitude and meridians 64° and 62° west longitude starting today within national jurisdiction.

The CFP took this decision for the shrimp fishing fleet to be able to follow the migration of the crustacean, which is shifting northwards according to recent studies.

So far, this is presented as another good year for the shrimp fishery.

The latest survey conducted states that “daily average yields per boat for the Subarea I (from 44° 30′ to 45° 00′ S) remained above 10 tonnes per day while for the Subarea II (from 44° 00′ to 44° 30′ S) they were between 8 and 15 t/day.”

In addition, the sizes of the captured and processed shrimp corresponded to 95 per cent between L1 and L3 while the average values of the hake/shrimp ratio ranged between 0.03 and 0.15.

CFP members also gave the green light to the crustacean fishing in the Restricted Effort Interjurisdictional Area (AIER), between latitudes 44° and 45° South, the outer limits of the jurisdiction of the Province of Chubut and the meridian 64° 30′ W.

Operations in this area will be restricted: they will only allow up to 22 beam trawlers to fish.

According to the data provided by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Nation, from 1 January to 26 July, 2013 a total of 31,312.9 tonnes of shrimp was landed in Argentinean ports.

These landings show a slight rise of 0.8 per cent between the first day of 2012 and 31 July of that year, when 31,034.3 tonnes of the crustacean were landed.

Moreover, the CFP confirmed that from next 7 August jigging vessels will be able to set sail again towards the squid fishing area, after a month of inactivity.

The momentary interruption and partial exploitation of the species at the north of 44° parallel was imposed in order to allow the specimens of Buenos Aires north-Patagonian stock (SBN) and the spring spawning stock (SDP) to reach a larger size.
