The State Government has not conducted any specific study to know the exact quantum of fish to meet people’s need while an average of 4,68,238 tonne of fish is produced in the State every year. Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister stated this in a written reply to a question of Independent MLA Sanatan Mahakud on Wednesday. Pointing out that a person needs to eat 11 kg of fish a year as per the ICMR standard, the Minister said the per capita consumption of the State stands at 12.24 kg now. While traders import 36,965 tonne of fish from Andhra Pradesh and other States, an average of 1,15,000 tonne of fish is exported from Odisha to other States and foreign countries annually. The State had produced 19,273 lakh eggs in 2015-16, he informed. While a person requires eating 190 eggs a year as per the standard set by the National Institute of Nutrition, the country’s per capita consumption stands at 55 and Odisha’s at 45 per annum. The State imports an average of 21,217 lakh eggs from Andhra Pradesh to meet its annual requirement every year, he further informed.
