Myanmar and Russian have signed a major deal to protects its waters and also cooperation in fishery and marine products. At the invitation of Llya Shestakov, Head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, the delegation led by Deputy Minister Dr Aung Gyi of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation attended the Global Fisheries Forum and Seafood Expo Russia forum held at the St Petersburg Exhibition and Convention Centre in St Petersburg, Russia.

Dr Aung Gyi signed the bilateral cooperation in the sectors that will benefit the production of amarine products for both countries with Llya Shestakov, Head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, at the Global Fishery Forum & Seafood Expo Russia Forum on Sept 22. Director-General U Wai Lin Maung of the Fisheries Department accompanied by the MoALI deputy minister, senior vice-president of the Myanmar Fisheries Federation Dr Toe Nandar Tin, Chairman U Hla Than of the Taninthayi Region Fisheries Federation and representatives also attended the event.

The bilateral agreement emphasises assessing the existence of marine fish resources between the two countries. Apart from that the agreement also assures conservation of fish resources, fish farming in cages in the sea, management of seawater resources, combatting illegal fishing, exchange of information on fisheries and aquaculture.

A major agreement under the project is that both countries will be strengthening cooperation between research organisations on aquaculture, providing training and discussions in fishing, and cooperation for the long-term development in areas of mutual interest in the fishery sector.
