The head of Mexico’s National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (Conapesca), Mario Aguilar Sanchez, announced the signing of cooperation agreements in fisheries and aquaculture areas with the Cuban government.

He also stressed the fishing-aquaculture production potential of Mexico in the Caribbean, which generates highly demanded resources in the local market and abroad.

As part of the XXXV Meeting of Mexico-Cuba Fishing Authorities, held in Mexico City, both countries agreed to reinforce their partnerships with the aim of ensuring sustainable and competitive production in the Caribbean region and strengthen the technical scientific cooperation program they are carrying out to boost the growth of the food sector.

The meeting was attended by the head of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa), Enrique Martinez y Martinez, and the Cuban Minister of Food Industry, Maria del Carmen Concepcion Gonzalez.

Officials in Cuba and Mexico also agreed to upgrade the Fisheries Agreement of 1976.

They also coincide in consolidating the established Technical and Scientific Cooperation Program signed by the two countries regarding the promotion and development of aquaculture in inland and marine waters, and the fishing biological research aspect, said the head of Conapesca.

The two delegations will exchange information on scale-fish system and production relevant to Mexico and Cuba.

Aguilar Sanchez also proposed, in his capacity as head of the Mexican delegation of Fisheries, the participation of technicians in the training events scheduled for this year in Mexico.

Meanwhile, the Cuban delegation proposed, among other things, Mexican participation in workshops on species of commercial interest such as sea cucumber and green spiny lobster.

It is anticipated that the next meeting of Cuba-Mexico Fishery Authorities will take place in the city of La Havana.
