Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the design and reconstruction of K. Kanduoiygiri Harbour. The project agreement was signed between MTCC and the government at a ceremony held at the Fisheries Ministry on Tuesday.

The project’s scope includes harbor dredging operations of 10,000cbm, channel dredging of 10,000cbm, construction of a 50m breakwater, a 63 m revetment, a 125m quay wall, and installation of 215m sheet pile, installation of harbor pavement, installation of the harbor and navigational lights. Additionally, work will be done to install a fresh-water and salt-water line on the harbor. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will also be conducted as part of the project scope. The value of the project is MVR 36,132,701.77 million, and the project is to be completed within 365 days.

K. Kanduoiygiri is an island assigned for the operations of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). The current facility developed by MIFCO on the island has the capacity to process yellowfin tuna. However, due to the poor state and low depth of the current harbor, it has become very difficult for incoming and outgoing vessels to enter and dock alongside this harbor.

According to MTCC, the completion of this project will ensure that the fishing vessels will have a harbor with adequate depth and protection, allowing them to safely dock alongside the harbor to attain service from the MIFCO facility.
