The International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) has just released the latest edition of its flagship journal on fisheries, SAMUDRA Report, which covers a range of issues relating to small-scale fisheries, fishing communities and livelihoods.

The current issue of SAMUDRA Report, No.65, dated July 2013, features articles and reports from New Zealand, Ireland, Latin America and Vietnam, as well as analyses of the Global Partnership for Oceans and an update on the recent FAO Technical Consultation on the International Guidelines for Securing Small-scale Fisheries.

One article reports on the slave-like working conditions for migrant crew on fishing vessels in New Zealand, while the Connemara Smokehouse and Visitors Centre, part of the European “Economuseum network, is featured in the piece from Ireland.

Two articles in the current issue of SAMUDRA Report focus on the World Bank-initiated Global
Partnership for Oceans (GPO) which may well end up blatantly ignoring the voices of the world’s small-scale fisher people unless it recognizes, and protects, ocean space for coastal fishing communities to safeguard their culture, dignity and source of livelihood.

Another article analyses how as no-take reserves and marine protected areas (MPAs) grow in number and size in continental and marine spaces, it is necessary to examine the human-rights issue of the exclusion of people.

A report on a training workshop in Honduras focuses on the need for gender equity in the fishing communities of central America, while another report from Vietnam shows how integrated shrimp-mangrove farming systems offer a solution for protecting mangroves and improving livelihoods.

The ICSF Statement at the Global Dialogue Forum for the Promotion of the ILO Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188), 15-17 May 2013, Geneva, has also been published in the current issue of SAMUDRA Report.

Rolf Willmann of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been profiled in the issue as the recipient of the inaugural MARE Oeuvre Award which was bestowed on him for his lifelong commitment to the cause of small-scale fishworkers.

The Roundup section of SAMUDRA Report No. 65 features news snippets, announcements and briefings on fisheries-related matters.
