Traditional fishermen in Kerala will observe a ‘sea hartal’ on October 26 for their survival and in protest against the deep sea fishing by unauthorized fishing boats in territorial waters of the sate.Talking to reporters Joint Action Samithy Chairman P V Janardhanan and General Convenor Jaxon Pollayil said trawling boats and user fee paid boats from neighbouring state were fishing in deep waters in the state due to apathetic attitude of the Central and state governments. These unauthorized fishermen were looting marine products through peyar trawling using boats with Chinese engine adversely affecting the traditional fishermen, they said.They said fisheries department under the state government had failed to take any action against such illegal activities during the 90-day trawling ban in the state prompting the traditional fishermen to go on an agitation.The traditional fishermen will not go out for fishing from Nileswaram to Parassala as part of the hartal, they added.
