Fisheries Minister J. Mercykutty Amma has said the government will adopt steps to promote ornamental fisheries among fish farmers in the State to tap the unutilised potential of the sector. Laying the foundation for the district freshwater fish hatchery of the Fisheries Department at Thalipuzha in the district on Monday, Ms. Mercykutty Amma said though the ornamental fisheries had a huge potential in the State, it was yet to be tapped properly. The proposed hatchery will set up at a cost of Rs. 165 lakh with a production capacity of 50 lakh fingerlings of Indian Major Carp such as Katla, Rohu and Mrigal a year . Ms. Mercykutty Amma also inaugurated a public aquarium of the Department at Karapuzha and disbursed fishing implements and life jackets to the members of the Banasura tribal fishing cooperative society at Padinharethara.
