Coastal Security Police (CSP) rescued 34 fishermen, who were on a fishing boat, which was about to capsize in Arabian Sea off Karwar coast on Wednesday night. The boat was also safely pulled to Karwar fishing port on Thursday.According to CSP inspector S M Rane, the boat, named Sri Rameshwara Krupa, left the port around 7.30pm with 34 fishermen on board on Wednesday night. They were fishing about 13 nautical miles (24km) off the Karwar shore. Around 9pm, the occupants of the boat noticed an ingress of water in the boat which had about 15 tonnes of fish catch worth Rs 2 lakh then. With water gushing in, the boat began to capsize, CSP officials added. One of the fishermen contacted boat owner Gopichand and threw all the catch into the sea, and the latter contacted CSP officials seeking help. By the time CSP personnel rushed to the site, the boat had sunk up to the engine level, the officials added. The fishermen said that they kept on emptying the water from the boat. Some of them were shifted to a CSP boat after it arrived at the spot, while the damaged fishing boat was pulled to the port here. The fishermen thanked CSP officials for rescuing them in the nick of time. It is suspected that a hole beneath the fibre boat led to the ingress of the water inside the boat.
