Iran exported $13,798 worth of fishery products last calendar year, which ended on March 19, showing a 64 percent rise compared to the year before, IRNA news agency reported.

The exported products weighed 4,594 tons, up 52 percent yea on year, the report added.

Iran is planning to export as much as $500 million shrimps by 2015, head of the fisheries organization Reza Razeqi stated.

Some 140,000 tons of fish and 6,000 tons of shrimp were hunted last year, he told Mehr news agency.

He added that the per capita consumption of fish in Iran stood at 8.5 kilograms last year, which is less than the world’s average.

He referred to Iraq, Kuwait, UAE, China, South Korea, Lebanon and Spain as the main destinations for Iranian shrimp.
