The national executive committee meeting of India’s National Fishworkers Forum began in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the other day.

Forum chairperson M Ilango inaugurated the meeting. The meeting urged the authorities to be cautious while giving relaxation in the Coastal Regulation Zone Act as it could be exploited for constructing shopping malls and similar purposes which would pose a threat to the coastal area and thereby to the fishermen community.

“The CRZ Act clearly recognised the rights of the traditional fishermen communities to have space inherited by them, the meeting said.

Forum vice-chairperson Vasudev Boloor, general secretary Narendra Patel, secretaries T Peter, Pradip Chatterji, among others, spoke.
