India’s National Fishworkers’ Forum will observe January 21, 2013, as the national day of protest against the commissioning of Kundankulam nuclear plant. Organisations affiliated to the NFF will strike work, and stage demonstrations across the coastal areas, a release said

Fisherfolk would begin a five-day dharna at Jantar Mantar in the first week of March demanding a separate Fisheries Ministry in the Union government, booking of violations of CRZ Notifications, demanding fishermen’s rights to fish in marine and coastal protected areas, their right to seasonal fish drying on Jambudwip, the ban on purse seining and kerosene and diesel subsidy for small and traditional fishermen.

A decision was taken during the National Fishworkers’ Forum general body meeting that was held here from Thursday to Saturday, the release said.

NFF also adopted resolution opposing the blanket ban on fishing imposed in Marine and coastal protected areas such as Sundarban in West Bengal, Gahirmatha and Bhitarkanika in Odisha and the Gulf of Mannar.
