Fishermen from Rameswaram in India, who launched an indefinite strike on November 6 protesting against the Sri Lankan Navy arresting them and seizing their trawlers on charges of illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters, decided to end the strike and resume fishing from today (Monday).

According to The Hindu newspaper, leaders of 11 fishermen associations held an informal discussion and decided to end the strike as a majority of fishermen could not afford to continue the strike in the absence of any alternative livelihood, P. Sesu Raju, secretary, coastal mechanised boat fishermen association, said.

He said the fishermen associations launched the strike, expecting the Centre and the State to prevail upon Sri Lanka to stop the arrest of fishermen, but there had been no sign of any relief.
