A sixty day fishing ban in Goa will be imposed from June 1st. Fishermen were winding up at Cutbona Jetty on Monday when the Herald correspondent visited the harbour. Some mechanized boat owners were busy winding this fishing season. One of the boat owners told Herald that by May 31st all most all the mechanized boats will stop and from June 1st not a single boat will venture out to sea. “We the Cutbona Boat owners do not go against the rule of the government. Fishing ban is for the betterment of the fishing community and also for the labourers who work on the boards” the boat owner said. This is the breeding season and the sea is rough during this period and it is not worth venturing out he said. Some of the boats are already anchored and the remaining boats which are already out at sea will return by tomorrow or the day after with the last catch. A majority of the workers on these fishing vessels are from out side Goa and many have already started packing their luggage to return their native place. Some of the workers and boat owners intend to take the boats to the dry dock for repairs and others were seen cleaning fishing nets. A boat owner said the season was decent. He said ” We are not very happy but satisfied with the fish production”. Unlike last season this year the season went smooth without any controversy or fights. Last fishing season was marked by several controversies. This year there was no incident of bull trawling though instances of LED lights and Speed Boats being used for fishing were reported. There were no fights between small boat owners and big boat owners. The next fishing season will start after the sixty days break on August 1st. Meanwhile the work of the harbour expansion is on in full swing. GSIDC is doing the expansion work of Cutbona fishing Harbour which is expected to be ready by October 2017. After this project Cutbona Jetty will get a new look.
