Following the constant demand made by traditional fishermen in the state to increase the length of their canoes, the state department of fisheries has decided to permit the construction and registration of canoes with maximum overall length of 38ft. Traditional fishermen in the state argued that the present canoe length of 36ft is not enough to withstand the rough sea conditions. Nor is there sufficient room to house the complete catch on a given day. “The current capacity of the canoes is too small for us. Often, we have had to throw access catch because the vessel can only withstand so much weight, said president, Goenchea ramponkaranchem ekvott (GRE) Agnelo Rodrigues.
