The Mormugao coastal police on Monday morning arrested 17 fishermen onboard two canoes for fishing in the restricted area from Grande Island (off Baina coast) to Betul. It may be recalled that Grande Island(off Baina coast) till Betul area was declared as restricted by the state administration for security reasons in view of the recently concluded BRICS summit. According to the police inspector Nerlon Albuquerque, fishing activity from Grande Island(off Baina coast) till Betul was banned due to security reasons in view of the BRICS summit, however on Monday early morning at about 3.30 am, the interceptor boats saw two canoes with 17 fishermen onboard carrying out fishing in restricted area. “These fishermen had no identity proofs and they did not even possess canoe documents. Hence they were detained and arrested under Section 151 of CrPC and were later taken to the Mormugao Coastal Police Station. They later produced the relevant documents and identity proofs on Monday afternoon. All were later produced before SDM Mormugao and were released on bail in the evening, PI Albuquerque added.
