A fisherman in Serenje has allegedly been shot dead by game scouts in Kasanka National Park while another is missing and feared dead.

Serenje district commissioner Charles Mwelwa said in a telephone interview yesterday that Lipson Mambwe of Mambwe Zebuloni village died on Thursday morning after he was allegedly shot by a game scout only identified as Fundanga.

“The other victim, Bin Goodson, was shot in the leg and rushed to Serenje District Hospital and one only identified as bashi Derrick is missing after being shot, Mr Mwelwa said.

Mr Mwelwa said the incident happened in Kasanka National Park when some game scouts arrested the victims from Mpelembe fishing area in Kasanka River.

Mr Mwelwa said authorities at Kasanka National Park do not allow fishermen to fish in the park because it is a prohibited area.

He said the three men were found around 08:00 hours fishing and were tied up to prevent them from escaping.

“Thereafter, the community heard of the development and entered into a bitter argument with the scouts. The three suspects, who attempted to escape, were then allegedly shot, he said.

He said 18 bullets were fired at the victims.

He said police in Serenje have launched investigations into the incident.
