In the whole Peruvian territory this Monday I Continental Fisheries Census, which aims to get to know the characteristics and current conditions of the fishing population that is active in the rivers, lakes and other inland aquatic environments of the country.

Besides, this census will reveal the type of boats used by the fishermen and the landing areas, among other issues.

The registration of information related to inland fisheries will be responsibility of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), at the request of the Ministry of Production (Produce).

The expert in sector programmes of the Directorate General for Fisheries Development of Produce, Maria Cuadros Dulanto, noted that this census has been performed for the first time in Peru, reported Pachamama Radio. It will cover the 24 departments of the national territory and it is expected to last about 30 days.

The Produce invites fishermen and fish farmers to participate in the census for the Government to have dated reliable information “to take measures promoting the development of the fisheries sector.”

“Through this survey, we will know the number of existing fishermen and fish farmers, if they have access to education and health, demographics, number of boats, living conditions and other aspects,” the Produce explained in a statement.

The registration will take place simultaneously in all the districts of Peru where fisheries and aquaculture takes place at the continental level.

This new census complements the I National Artisanal Fisheries Census in the Maritime Field, held in March 2012. This time more than 50,000 fishermen and 15,000 artisanal ship owners were surveyed on the coast of the departments of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash, Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua, Tacna and the Constitutional Province of Callao.
