Heavy swells are expected to hit coastlines in Wellington and Wairarapa in New Zealand from 6pm tonight, and stick around until 11pm on Thursday.

On Wellington’s south coast, Ōwhiro Bay residents have been given a truckload of sandbags by the Wellington City Council, and workers in the process of smoothing a naturally-created “sand ramp”, which worsened the effects of the last storm surge, have moved their machinery.

MetService has issued warnings for Wellington between Cape Terawhiti and Turakirae Head from 6pm tonight to 6pm tomorrow, and Wairarapa between Turakirae Head and Mataikona from 9pm tonight to 3am on Friday.

Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) acting regional manager Dan Neely said people in affected areas should prepare for wave heights of 5 to 6 metres overnight tonight, continuing the weather pattern which damaged roads over the weekend.
