Over 200 houses and other establishments were damaged as a nor’wester lashed Satkhira’s Shyamnagar upazila on Thursday.

The nor’wester struck Ramjanagar, Koikhali, and Munshiganj unions around 11:30pm. So far, no casualties have been reported, but a local fisherman named Ruhul Kuddus has been missing since morning, said Koikhali UP Chairman Abdur Rahim said. The fisherman was fishing at the river during the nor’wester, he added.

Meanwhile, Satkhira District Meteorological Officer Zulfikar Ali said that the sudden storm was a nor’wester. “Such storms start and stop abruptly. The intensity of these storms is very high.” Members of river police and Border Guard Bangladesh rescued two people from the Kalindi River during the storm, Asgar Ali, a ward member of Ramjannagar union parishad said. Several houses have been partially damaged in the storm as well. Besides, many trees were uprooted in Madyapara, Colonypara, Gatepara and Golakhali areas adjacent to the Sundarbans.

The local government has distributed dry food and water among the victims. Power supply has been snapped since the storm hit the areas, reports UNB. Md Aktar Hossain, Shyamnagar upazila nirbahi officer, said they are yet to know the extent of damages caused by the nor’wester.
