To ensure the propagation and natural reproduction of fish in the Kaptai lake of Rangamati, like other years, the local administration has imposed a three-month ban on netting, marketing and transportation of fish in Kaptai Lake for the next 3 months from April 25 to July 24.

Deputy Commissioner Md Mosaraf Hossain Khan informed the decision of the ban in the meeting at the district administration office on Thursday. The deputy commissioner said that this ban has been imposed to release carp fish in the lake during this period and to increase the fishery resources.

The naval police will be deployed at various places in the lake along with the operation of mobile courts to stop illegal fishing, transportation and marketing during this period. Action will be taken against those involved in illegal fishing in the lake. Local ice mills will remain closed during the ban. Besides, local markets and Kaptai Lake will be monitored, he added.

Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation, Rangamati Manager, Commander Ashraful Alam Bhuiyan said that the water level of the lake has dried up due to less rainfall this year. This has resulted in less fishing of small fish.

At this time fish breeding begins. Therefore, to ensure the natural reproduction of fish, a ban on fishing has been issued, he added. Head of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute Rangamati River Sub-Center, Ishtiaq Haider, Additional District Magistrate Zobaida Akhtar, and leaders of fish traders were present.
