Fish farming on T-Aman paddy fields is gaining momentum across the district. Sources said fish cultivation on croplands is gaining popularity in all the twelve upazilas of the district as farmers can make massive profit from it. Sources said Bogra is the best area in the country’s northern side for fresh water fish cultivation and fish farming on paddy fields is another notable success in the district’s agriculture sector. The district’s Fisheries Department said around 500 hectares of paddy field have been taken under fish farming along with thousands of ponds and fresh water body in the low lying areas. The new varieties of Pangash, Ruhi, carp (Katal), Tilapia and indigenous species of fish varieties being produced in the paddy field, sources said. Golzar Hossain Bablu, 56, a farmer of Joypurpara village in Dupchanchia municipality said he has taken around one acre of paddy field under fish cultivation this season spending Tk 40,000. He said he expects Tk 0.2 million profit from it. Upazila fisheries officer Maksudul Islam said fish production has great prosperity in this area because of its low lying areas. Farmers of the area urge the government to assist the growers to help cultivate paddy along with fish to boost the country’s economy.
