Three organisations demanded Monday proper implementation of environmental protection act, forest act and wildlife protection act in a bid to stop industrialisation in the ecologically critical area (ECA) like Sundarbans. They also demanded taking measures to stop setting up of all kinds of industries including coal-fired power plants in the areas adjacent to the Sundarbans, said a press release. Coastal Livelihood and Environmental Action Network (CLEAN), Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and Committee of Concerned Citizens (CCC)-Khulna placed the demands at a press conference held in Khulna city. The three organisations also declared a ‘Mangrove Week’ to be observed from September 24. The week will be observed to create awareness among the people and raise voice against industrial and infrastructural development initiatives, the release said. Chief executive of CLEAN Hasan Mehedi, Area Manager of TIB Firoz Uddin, Regional Manager of Aparajeo Bangladesh Mahbub Alam Prince, YES member Shusmit Sarker and Kamal Hossain were present in the programme. Hasan Mehedi said a massive industrial and infrastructural development initiative has been taken in the Sundarbans zone by the government and private companies. More than 150 industries including Orion coal-based power plant, cement factories, LPG plants, and silo have been established or planned beside Rampal coal-fired power plant. All these factories will affect the Sundarbans, the release said.
