A new report from the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) has identified geographical areas in Southeast Asia which require environmental improvements in shrimp farming. The report highlighted 16 provinces in six countries – Thailand, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and Bangladesh – which are facing pressing sustainability concerns. SFP encourages the seafood industry to work with local producers to initiate shrimp-focused aquaculture improvement projects (AIPs) in the priority provinces and implement zonal management strategies that address the disease management needs and environmental concerns that are prevalent in these regions. In other news, two environmental science students at the Institute for Environment and Society at Brown University have won an international prize for their idea to make Kenyan fish farming more sustainable. The two students and their collaborators received $10,000 for their innovative idea for an alternative feed made from black soldier fly larvae.
