GUWAHATI: Union minister for Ayush and former CM , while inaugurating the G20 Sustainable Fianancial Working Group (SFWG) meeting in Guwahati on Thursday, said India’s G20 presidency can steer the empowerment of international nstitutions that respond to the realities of the 21st century and direct global governance in the ‘decade of action’ to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Briefing the media, Sonowal said the opportunity given by the G20 body to India to host the event will pave the roadmap for the country as a whole, and Assam in particular, to address various issues related to climate change and sustainable finance in climate action. “Sustainable finance for climate action is the need of the hour for a better future for the next generation. The entire world is concerned about climate change and is working on it unanimously so that the SDGs can be achieved,” he added.

The Union minister said the matters pertaining to bringing funds from various public and private institutions for climate action is what needs to be considered and a roadmap needs to be prepared for that. He added that holding the G20 meeting here in Guwahati is an opportunity to draw the attention of the world towards the issues of Assam related to climate change. Sonowal said billions and trillions of dollars need to be mobilized if we hope to achieve the 2030 agenda for sustainable development as well as the goals of the Paris Agreement for climate action. “Therefore, plugging this massive finance gap will require a coordinated effort between the public and private sectors and from the local to the global level,” he added.
