Between 1 January and 30 April, 2014 Argentinean maritime ports received a total of 233,378.6 tonnes of fishing resources.

This figure shows a decrease of 14.7 per cent compared to the accumulated volume in the same period of 2013, when 273,298.9 tonnes were landed.

Out of the total amount landing this year, 133,810.9 tonnes were fish, 82,837.6 tonnes were molluscs and 16,730.1 tonnes were crustaceans, according to statistics from the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MINAGRI).

The most voluminous catches of squid (Illex argentinus), totaling 80,877.2 tonnes until 30 April, 2014, 28.5 per cent less than what was landed in the first four months of last year (113,107.7 tonnes).

In second place was the common hake (Merluccius hubbsi), with 69,363.5 tonnes representing a decrease of 10.8 per cent when compared with 77,714.6 tonnes landed between 1 January and 30 April, 2013.

Besides, 4147.1 tonnes of sea trout (Cynoscion striatus), 2,293 tonnes of flounder (Paralichthys patagonicus), 1,165.6 tonnes of red snapper (Pagrus pagrus), 1,149.9 tonnes of Patagonian smoothhound (Mustelus schmitti) and 580.7 tonnes of red cod (Salilota australis) were landed.

As to molluscs, 1,883.5 tonnes of Patagonian scallops (Zygochlamys patagonica) were landed.

In relation to shellfish, 14,874.5 tonnes of shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) were unloaded until 30 April, 2014, that is to say, 76.5 per cent more than in the first four months of last year, when 8,424.5 tonnes were landed.

Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires) continued to maintain its leadership in the domestic fisheries, as it received 120,294 tonnes of fish resources in its docks.
Puerto Madryn (Chubut) ranked second with 33,617.2 tonnes landed in the first four months.

It was followed by Puerto Deseado (Santa Cruz) with 31,560 tonnes; Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego), with 18,296.6 tonnes; and Rawson (Rawson), with 10,303.3 tonnes, among other port terminals.

According to the Undersecretariat, between 1 January and 30 April, 2014 the fleet that recorded the highest level of catches was that of the national jiggers, with 73,031 tonnes.

Behind them, the fresh fish vessels were located with 53,631.7 tonnes; trawlers with 45,994.7 tonnes; and coastal vessels with 32,708.6 tonnes, among other vessels.
