The Forest Survey of India (FSI) has singled out Gujarat’s efforts as a factor for the 23.34 sq km increase in India’s mangrove cover between 2009 and 2011.

The report says India has a mangrove cover of 4,662 sq km, roughly half of which lies in the Sundarbans, West Bengal.

According to the National Wetland Atlas, released last year and considered the most authoritative reference for wetlands in the country, Gujarat has 746 mangrove wetlands covering 904.75 sq km spread over 13 districts.
