WSI, the International Organisation for Women in the Seafood Industry, has announced its awards for the year 2020 for films that describe the struggles, discriminations and opportunities that women face in the seafood industry around the world.
Marie Christine Monfort, WSI Executive director, says: “The strong stories from all over the world are all very singular and universal at the same time. They describe struggles, discriminations and opportunities that women face in the seafood industry. In all cases the films say that women play a paramount role along the seafood supply chain. Without them, seafood would never reach the consumers and it is time for the industry to pay attention.”
For the fourth consecutive year, WSI has discovered and awarded prizes to extraordinary stories from Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Japan, Tanzania and India.
Among the 23 films in competition from 15 countries, the international jury had the sensitive mission of determining the Official Awards. This year, WSI opened a “Life under Covid” film category as the COVID virus has severely hit seafood workers, especially women.
The international jury, which included highly recognised professionals, has awarded prizes to the following films:
First prize: Move Forward (Indonesia)
“What a positive, inclusive, and hopeful vision of the role of women in fisheries”, says John Parks, Senior Associate, TetraTech consultant. “An uplifting story of education and technology”, confirms Milika Sobey, human and fishing rights expert in the Pacific region.
Second prize: Women in Fisheries: Our Stories (UK)
The Exeter (UK)-based producing team of the filme shared their enthusiasm: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded the second prize in this competition, amongst many excellent contributions showcasing women’s work and positions in fisheries from around the world. We hope that achieving this international and prestigious recognition from WSI will help us to push for better national recognition of the work women do in UK fisheries.”
Third prize Changing Tradition: Nadeshico Sushi (Japan)
“This unique film offers a good example of perseverance, entrepreneurship and women changing traditions”, commented jury member Zuridah Merican, Editor & Publisher of AQUACULTURE Asia Pacific.
Third prize: Women Fishworkers: Our Story Matters (Tanzania)
Though displaying a very different style, the film from Tanzania collected the same number of votes as the Japanese film. WSI is delighted to distribute a second third prize to this outstanding story.
Category:“Life under COVID”
2020 has hit women in the seafood industry hard due to the closure of markets, the sole source of income for many. WSI is proud to make the two following stories visible:
First prize: Overcoming Tribulations: The Story of Ramani (India)
“A very powerful and poignant story of Ramani, a fish seller who adapts with audacity to the dramatic 2020 Covid19 pandemic by buying a scooter, a rare and brave act for a woman in India”.
Special WSI mention: No Work, No Money, No Food (India)
“This film depicts the stark reality facing women fishers as a direct result of the statewide lockdowns brought on by the Covid pandemic”, according to the citation.
According to Hélène Gobert, Fisheries and Ocean Project Manager, Agence Française de Développement : "The French Development Agency is proud to support the WSI competition, which demonstrate by example that the role of women in the fisheries and aquaculture sector is paramount. By making their experiences public and visible, these videos, which we must all share widely, should encourage decisionmakers to take them into account in development policies and projects.”
