Caribbean Network of Fisherfolk Organizations publishes latest monthly newsletter June 21,2019   |  Source: CNFO

The Caribbean Network of Fisherfolk Organizations (CNFO) has published the latest edition of its monthly newsletter, “FisherFolk Net” (No. 27, dated May 2019), which carries articles from the region, specifically, from Belize, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia and elsewhere.

The article from Belize warns that further restrictions on gillnet fishers will have clear negative impacts on more than 4,000 Belize nationals. Gillnet fisheries in Belize is consistent with the nation’s obligations to national, regional and global fisheries policy structures, such as the Caribbean Community Common Fisheries Policy (CCCFP) and the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines), the article notes.

A report on the United Nations' Decade of Family Farming and a Global Action Plan quotes Ms. Josana Pinto who represented the fishing community as a member of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP). Josana is on the co-ordinating committee of WFFP and comes from the organization Movimento de Pescadores e Pescadoras (MPP), or the Movement of Artisanal Fishermen and Fisherwomen.

Mr. Mitchell Lay of the Caribbean Network of Fisherfolk Organizations (CNFO) participated in a workshop
