Russia, Cambodia agree on closer fisheries, aquaculture partnership July 18,2019   |  Source: UCN

Representatives from Russia and Cambodia have signed an agreement for a closer partnership between the countries' fishery and aquaculture departments, reports Khmer Times.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the pair was signed at last week's Global Fishery Forum & Seafood Expo in St. Petersburg by Ilya Shestakov, head of Russia's Federal Agency for Fisheries, and Eng Chea San, director general of Cambodia's Fisheries Administration.

The MoU pledges closer cooperation on issues such as conservation, management and optimal use of water resources, prevention and elimination of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, greater sharing of fisheries and aquaculture data, and collaborations between national research teams.

This new agreement follows the 2015 deal to cooperate on prevention of IUU fishing. In 2018, the two countries also agreed to increase imports of agricultural products such as rice, animal products, and fish.
