Coronavirus in Scotland: Foreign fishermen stranded on boats by lockdown rules by John Jeffay June 30,2020   |  Source: The Times

Foreign fishermen have been left stranded and penniless, living on their boats at Scottish ports, during the pandemic, it has emerged.

Immigration regulations prevent them from entering the country, but lockdown rules mean they cannot return to their home countries.

The Scottish government has said it was “deeply concerned about the acute hardship” faced by the workers, and that many have been confined to their vessels after losing their incomes and being unable to travel home or access alternative support.

Ministers believe it has created a “significant and unacceptable health risk”.

Apostleship of the Sea, an international seafarers charity, blamed the “unfortunate consequence of lockdown” on a “lack of clarity” over the immigration status of the workers.
