Scottish govt dismisses possibility of dedicated fisheries minister July 08,2019   |  Source: UCN

The Scottish government has rejected the calls for a specialized fisheries minister on first minister Nicola Sturgeon's cabinet, reports The Press and Journal.

The Scottish Fisheries Federation has led demands that the UK and Scottish governments appoint dedicated fisheries ministers in their respective cabinets to fight for the industry's perspective during Brexit negotiations.

SFF chief executive Bertie Armstrong led the calls for a new post during Theresa May's final visit to Scotland in her role as UK prime minister. Scottish fishermen have widely backed Brexit on the basis that it would provide a way out of the EU's unpopular common fisheries policy (CFP).

However, in her most recent visit, May said there were no guarantees the UK would be out of the CFP before the end of 2020.

Armstrong argued the need for a dedicated fisheries minister was clear in order to have someone well versed on the sector available during discussions that will have a direct impact on day-to-day fisheries management.

However, the Scottish government has rejected the idea, on the grounds that the secretary for the rural economy, Fergus Ewing, is already demonstrating a "clear commitment to the sector, championing its interests at every opportunity".
