Fish workers in Kerala, India, to raise voice against 'ocean grabbing' by Laxmi Prasanna November 13,2017   |  Source: TNN

In the seventh general assembly of World Forum of Fisher People (WFFP) in Delhi from Nov 15 to 21, the fisher community members from Kerala are set to voice for their rights and for implementation of stringent rules against `Ocean grabbing' through shady deals by major corporates and multinational companies along the coast which affects the small scale fisher community across the globe. It will also be a call to strengthen the fisher community against ocean grabbers.

This comes in the wake of the fisher's anxiety that ocean grabbing is occurring at a rapid pace mainly through policies, laws, and practices that are re-defining and re-allocating access, use and control of fisheries resources away from small-scale fishers and their communities, and often with little concern for the adverse environmental consequences. Existing customary and communal fisheries' tenure rights systems and use and management practices are being ignored and ultimately lost in the process.

The upcoming general assembly of WFFP is planned for inauguration by Uttar Pradesh governor Ram Naik in the presence of Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers welfare Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
