Issues:  privatisation, deregulation, export oriented production, globalisation of fishing rights, globalisation of the market for fishery products, Free Trade Agreements etc.

Objectives: To obtain a general overview of the characteristics, state of organizations and main challenges for artisanal fishing in the region in the context of globalisation processes and the implementation of the neoliberal model.

Objectives: Understand the current situation and trends as regards the diverse production systems in artisanal fishing and coastal communities, their participation, rights, productive control and final use/ markets of the products

 What rights are important for artisanal fishing and coastal communities (inland and marine) in Latin America?
a) Under prevailing conditions and taking into account the diverse realities of artisanal fishing and coastal communities in Latin America, what are the key issues and claims as regards defending access and use rights for marine resources and land areas for artisanal fishing and coastal communities
b) How can political and legal recognition be gained for the access and use rights of artisanal fishing and coastal communities?
c) How can the rights of industrial and semi industrial fishing sectors and other segments of the fishery sector be regulated, so as to secure the access and use rights of artisanal fishing and coastal communities?
